 Abstract:  The Jam Handy Organization, founded by Henry Jamison "Jam" Handy in the 1930s, produced educational, promotional, and informational films for over 40 years. During that time, an estimated 7,000 motion pictures were created by the company. The Jam Handy Filmstrip Collection contains 125 filmstrips and 3 phonograph recordings made by the company in Detroit, Michigan, and are in both black-and-white and color. The films cover topics such as agriculture, machinery and office equipment, department and discount stores, appliances, automobiles, food, pharmaceuticals, and clothing. The collection is open for research. Use of original filmstrips in the collection is restricted. Access may be unavailable due to lack of appropriate hardware. Researchers interested in this material should contact Benson Ford Research Center staff in advance. 2 cubic ft. (4 boxes).

 Abstract:  James and Ann Bradbury both worked at the Ford Rouge Plant Steel Mill, James as a metallurgist and Ann as a chemist. Retiring around 1985 and 1980, respectively, they witnessed many changes at the plant during their tenures. The James and Ann Bradbury Ford Motor Company Plant Photographs contains photographs commissioned by Ford Motor Company to document various plant construction projects from the 1930s to 1973. It contains 152 linen-backed photographs illustrating construction sites of Ford locations, a series on the construction of an electric furnace (project no. 10763), and a series on Rolling Mill Shipping (project no. 10764). The collection contain 37 additional photographic prints not associated with specific projects and a 1971 newspaper clipping. 0.5 cubic ft.(1 box).

 Abstract:  James H. Burris was a tin and sheet iron worker in Baltimore, Maryland. He did pump and lamp work, and created punched tin pieces and supplies for fruit, oyster, and crab packers. These supplies included colanders, skimmers, cups, pots, and measures. The James H. Burris Papers contains four folders of correspondence, a lock of hair, two canning recipe books with notes by Elizabeth Burris, illustrations by J.H. Burris, assorted recipes for bar cleaning fluids, and photographs of Burris, his employees, and products they produced. 0.25 cubic ft. (1 box).

 Abstract:  James E. Maxfield, Jr. (1848-1919), an illustrator, portraitist, and landscape painter, was born in Ohio, but grew up in Michigan. According to Paul Mattingly in "An American Art Colony", Maxfield studied under artist John Mix Stanley, an itinerant sign and portrait painter. Maxfield eventually found his way to Ridgefield, New Jersey, where his home became the headquarters for the Country Sketch Club. The James Maxfield Papers, 1896, contains 13 pieces of correspondence; 6 envelopes; 2 patterned paper napkins; a list of prices or costs on a scrap of paper; and a receipt for a burial, possibly for his wife Jennie who passed on 23 September 1896.  Abstract:  Halloween has been a part of American culture in some form since the start of the country. With its Celtic origins, and other traditions rooted in pagan and Christian practices, immigrants continued to celebrate the holiday. In the early 20th Century, Halloween became more associated with pranks and mischief, resulting in public parties with treats becoming more prevalent to discourage vandalism. Trick-or-treating also began around the same time, becoming an established U.S. custom during the 1950s. This collection, assembled by The Henry Ford curator Jim Johnson, contains 88 books, pamphlets, and periodicals documenting home and public celebratory practices of Halloween, mostly from the 20th Century. Included are a set of reproduction Dennison's Bogie Books from 1912-1926 and 1933. Also included are two wood engraving prints that were clipped from magazines.

 Abstract:  On 22 November 1963, Theodore Mecke was the Vice President of Public Affairs at Ford Motor Company. That day, news of President John F. Kennedy's assassination came across the wire, with the Dow Jones Co. updating the information as it became available. At the end of the day, Mr. Mecke retrieved the sheets from his waste basket, believing they were of historical significance. The John F. Kennedy Assassination Teletype Messages contains 61 broad sheet paper tape printouts, as well as the clipboard Mr. Mecke used to store them. The collection is open for research. 2 cubic ft.  Abstract:  John Warren Watson was the owner of the John Warren Watson Company in Philadelphia. He developed a Stabilator to be used to create a more comfortable ride in automobiles by slowing down the recoil of the car springs. Watson was also the original owner of the 1931 Duesenberg Model J Convertible Victoria that is currently in the collections of The Henry Ford (Object ID 62.9.2). The John Warren Watson Duesenberg and Stabilator Collection contains two automobile registrations for the Duesenberg, from 1931 and 1941; 3 photographic prints and 2 photographic slides of the vehicle; 7 pieces of Stabilator product literature; 3 Stabilator parts and service manuals; 5 photographic prints showing the Stabilator attached to a vehicle, as well as product advertising; and one photographic print of a 1904 Autocar. In 1926, the East Indian went on its first around-the-world voyage, taking automobile parts and completed automobiles to Southeast Asia and returning with a load of rubber. This collection contains 27 photographic prints taken of the ship and the journey, 1 exterior photograph of the Ford offices in Montevideo, Uruguay, 11 Engineer's Voyage Reports from the trip, and 5 drawings pertaining to the ship and its cargo.

This collection contains a large number of 8x10 black-and-white photographic prints and negatives documenting the Packard plant, automobile shows, assorted Packard automobiles including the Patrician and the Clipper, assorted automobile parts, testing in the plant and on the road, and firefighter drills performed at the plant. Also included are the December 1949 issue of the Packard News, two audiocassettes that contain an interview with Grenier made on 3 March 2003, six CD-ROMs containing digital images, and one unlabeled CD-ROM.
