 Abstract:  James E. Maxfield, Jr. (1848-1919), an illustrator, portraitist, and landscape painter, was born in Ohio, but grew up in Michigan. According to Paul Mattingly in "An American Art Colony", Maxfield studied under artist John Mix Stanley, an itinerant sign and portrait painter. Maxfield eventually found his way to Ridgefield, New Jersey, where his home became the headquarters for the Country Sketch Club. The James Maxfield Papers, 1896, contains 13 pieces of correspondence; 6 envelopes; 2 patterned paper napkins; a list of prices or costs on a scrap of paper; and a receipt for a burial, possibly for his wife Jennie who passed on 23 September 1896. The collection is open for research. 0.25 cubic ft. (1 box).

 Abstract:  William McDonald, a trained machinist from Glasgow, Scotland, moved to Lapeer, Michigan in the late 1860s. He purchased an interest in the shop of Mr. Newton, and after an 1872 fire destroyed the buildings, bought out his partner and began operating as McDonald & Sons. The business manufactured steam engines, brass and iron castings, and assorted machinery. The building was later moved to Greenfield Village, where it is currently known as the Davidson-Gerson Gallery of Glass. The Lapeer Machine Shop Records, 1868-1924, contains ledgers and other records books; catalogs and brochures from assorted machine companies; financial records, including canceled checks, receipts, and statements; newspaper clippings; photographic prints; and correspondence. Extent: 11.02 cubic ft. (12 boxes and 9 loose volumes). The collection is unprocessed but open for research.

 Abstract:  At the end of 1999, Canadian photographer Laura McGuire collected items related to the end of the millennium and the Year 2000 problem, better known at Y2K. The Laura McGuire Millennium Collection contains photographic prints that were taken by her in the Detroit area at the end of 1999. Subjects of these prints include a water sellout, the border crossing between Detroit and Windsor, a survival supply store, and sunset at Belle Isle on New Year's Eve. Other items include a t-shirt; a book about Y2K; a special edition of The New York Times; Y2K brochures; and a newspaper clipping. Of note is a doll wearing a dress knitted by 102 year old Lottie Slomczenski which bears a note stating, "Looking forward to the Millennium to have lived in 3 centuries." 0.3 cubic ft. (1 box).

 Abstract:  The Macintosh 512k personal computer was marketed in 1985, and had an increased memory capacity over the previous Macintosh design, the 128k. When purchased, the computer came with an assortment of program disks and manuals, with more being able to be purchased by the consumer. The Macintosh 512k Personal Computer Materials contain items collected by the original purchaser of the computer. These contain the original purchase receipt and repair paperwork; a sample of printer paper; the original Macintosh operating manuals in their case, as well as nine other books and manuals; one box containing nine 3.5 inch floppy disks; MasterType and Colormate operating software; and three computer games in packages, "Exodus Ultima III," "Murder By the Dozen," and "Mouse Stampede." The collection is open for research, however use of floppy disks contained in the collection is restricted. 1 cubic ft. (1 box).
