 Abstract:  John Greene was the first member of the Greene family in America, arriving in Boston, Massachusetts from Salisbury, England in 1636. The family later moved to Providence, Rhode Island. The collection is primarily comprised of personal letters among family members beginning in 1813, but there are a1so a land deed from 1805 and theatre programs from 1876.

 Abstract:  John Chesnut was a colonel in the Revolutionary War who resided in Camden, South Carolina. Mr. Chesnut became the owner of the Mulberry Plantation just outside Camden and the property was passed down to one of his sons, James, a United States Senator before the Civil War. Included in the collection are records of business transactions, bills and receipts, and legal documents, such as wills and land indentures.

 Abstract:  These papers are predominantly correspondence from family members to Elizabeth Folsom, wife of Dr. Norton Folsom who served as an army surgeon and as resident physician at Massachusetts General Hospital 1869-1876. Included in the collection are business letters from a firm of attorneys, numerous cancelled checks, and miscellaneous notes from Mrs. Folsom's years of widowhood.

 Abstract:  The Robins Papers consist of business related and personal correspondence between friends and relatives of James B. Robins of Wilcox County, Alabama. Some of the letters discuss the death of James' brother and financial settlements of the estate with nephews Josiah and Samuel Robins. Of particular interest 1s a letter dealing with the sale of black slaves valued at twenty thousand dollars.

 Abstract:  The Shaw Papers consist primarily of letters written to Acenith Shaw in Moreville and York, Washtenaw County, Michigan. Acenith was a school girl of about fourteen in 1864. Many of the letters to her are from school friends and cousins who also lived in Michigan. The girls wrote of family activities, school, planned visits, and current interests. Some of the letters describe their arrangements for teaching school, and in time, marriages and children.

In the collection are the marriage certificate of James Gardner and Jane Flaherty, 29 Nov 1882, and a letter of thanks to the church choir on the occasion of the death of James.

 Abstract:  The Spicer papers are predominantly family letters from members in towns in Minnesota. One letter of interest mentions an impending cataract operation in 1810, others relate to land transactions and opportunities. A calendar of most of the letters is at the beginning of the folder with short notes on their contents.

 Abstract:  The Robertson papers are the lettera of Isaac and John Robertson to family members in Ohio. They were sent from various military camps of the Union Army during the Civil War and describe some of the battles in which the brothers participated. Included in the collection is a letter informing Mrs. Robertson that the effects of John, deceased, had been shipped from the hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Another letter accompanied pension forms from the Ohio Military Claim office. Of particular interest are the patriotic motifs on some of the stationery.
