| 23 | Title: | Irving R. Bacon Scrapbook, 1919 | | | | Accession: | 99.1.1805 | | | | Creator: | Bacon, Irving R.(Irving Rueben), 1875-1962 | | | | Abstract: | Irving R. Bacon was an artist from Fitchburg, Massachusetts. After completing art school in Detroit, he worked as an illustrator for the Detroit Evening News and the Detroit Free Press. After leaving Detroit for a while, he returned and began working for Henry Ford, first at his newspapers and later at the Ford Motor Company, painting scenes and portraits for the museum and scenery for the museum's theater. In 1919, Henry Ford sued the Chicago Tribune for libel over comments they made about him. The ensuing trial occurred in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, with Ford being awarded 6 cents in compensation. During this trial, it appears that Irving Bacon was present in the courtroom and created sketches of the event. The Irving R. Bacon Scrapbook contains 65 sketches of assorted individuals participating in the trial, including the judge, attorneys, witnesses, and jurors. Also included are some photocopies of certain sketches. 0.3 cubic ft. (1 box). | | | | Similar Items: | Find |
