With its Celtic origins, and other traditions rooted in pagan and Christian practices, immigrants continued to celebrate the holiday. In the early 20th Century, Halloween became more associated with pranks and mischief, resulting in public parties with treats becoming more prevalent to discourage vandalism. Trick-or-treating also began around the same time, becoming an established U.S. custom during the 1950s. This collection, assembled by The Henry Ford curator Jim Johnson, contains 88 books, pamphlets, and periodicals documenting home and public celebratory practices of Halloween, mostly from the 20th Century. Included are a set of reproduction Dennison's Bogie Books from 1912-1926 and 1933. Also included are two wood engraving prints that were clipped from magazines. | | | | Similar Items: | Find |
