 Abstract:  A collection of 19 4x5 inch black-and-white prints of images taken by photographer Mack Gniewek following the death of Henry Ford in April 1947. The photographs were taken for the Detroit Times newspaper and primarily show Henry Ford lying in repose at Lovett Hall as well the line of mourners. Also included are images of black bunting and lowered flags displayed at the Ford Rouge Plant and the Dearborn Municipal Building.

 Abstract:  The Ward Farm Records documents the operation of the family dairy farm run by Harold and Mary Ward, located near Armada, Michigan. The records include plaques, business ledgers, photographs, newspaper clippings, professional farm journals, auction bills, a land survey and broadside. Note: This is an UNPROCESSED COLLECTION and has not yet been prepared for routine service (i.e. housed for safe handling, labeled, and cataloged). Access may be restricted in order to maintain physical and intellectual control, and is at the discretion of archives personnel.

 Abstract:  Collection consists of a single album containing photographs taken during the 1934 Century of Progress International Exposition held in Chicago, Illinois. Images show Ford staff, presenters, and performers, along with exhibit buildings and visitors, including Henry and Edsel Ford. The album was either made by or assembled for Fred L. Black, who was selected by Edsel Ford to organize the Ford Motor Company exhibit at the Exposition, and who appears in many of the images. Prior to that assignment, Black had served as Editor of the Dearborn Independent and head of the Ford Advertising Department. He would go on to oversee Ford involvement in other expositions held during the 1930s, including the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair.

 Abstract:  The Cocheco Manufacturing Company produced textiles in Dover, New Hampshire, from 1827 until its purchase by Pacific Mills in 1909. Cocheco continued to operate in Dover, and for a period in Lawrence, Massachusetts, until ceasing production in 1937. The collection consists of fabric and print samples in a variety of forms, including engraver's sheets; sample sheets; salesman' folders; and individual fabric pieces. Extent: 66 cubic ft. (109 boxes). The collection is open for research.

 Abstract:  The collection consists of a photograph album containing 32 pages of captioned snapshots along with several loose album pages, likely from the same album. It is assumed that Lelia Gibson took the photographs, assembled the album, and captioned the album pages. The snapshots, thought to date between 1919 and 1921, are primarily of various tourist spots along the Potomac River and in nearby areas of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. Other locations include Florida, Yellowstone National Park, and Glacier National Park. The album also includes images of President Warren G. Harding's inauguration on the east portico of the U.S. Capital Building on March 4, 1921.

 Abstract:  Theorem painting is an traditional American folk art technique, popular in the 1800s, in which stencils are used to paint on fabric. Margaret Jane Barton, an artist from Owosso, Michigan, began selling her own theorem paintings in 1975. Soon after, she was contracted by The Henry Ford to copy paintings found in the museum collections and produce new ones that were sold in the gift shop. This collection contains six large and six small stencils and accompanying photographs, correspondence, purchase orders, tax information, clippings, a book on theorem painting, two packets of stencils produced by Summer Kitchen Studios, notes, sales records, and two small theorem paintings.

 Abstract:  A subsidiary of Haskell Manufacturing Company, the Haskell Boat Company located in Ludington, Michigan, produced molded plywood canoes from 1917 to 1934. This small collection of material consists of correspondence including some on Haskell letterhead; advertising booklets, brochures, and clippings describing the canoes; and a 1993 clipping on the history of the Haskelite Company.

 Abstract:  Evelyn Y. Davis was born in Amsterdam in 1929 and emigrated to the United States in the 1950s with her father. She then started working in corporate shareholding, becoming known as a shareholder activist. She created her own publication, Highlights and Lowlights, in 1965, which was marketed to CEOs and offered insider scoop for the business world. This collection contains seven issues of Highlights and Lowlights, published from 2005 to 2011.

 Abstract:  Unprocessed collection of 25 technical drawings produced by Ford Motor Company showing various components of Ford's Experimental Sports Car, the Mustang Roadster of 1962 (now better known by the retronym Mustang I). The plans may have been used by Troutman & Barnes of Los Angeles, California, when that firm prepared the aluminum body for the working prototype.

 Abstract:  Andrew "bunnie" Huang received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from M.I.T. in 2002. His interest in reverse engineering and the hacking of consumer products led him to write Hacking the Xbox: An Introduction to Reverse Engineering, which was released in 2003. This collection contains periodicals, newspaper clippings, books, correspondence, legal documents, printouts of digital articles, contracts, project proposals, and photographic prints related to his career and the Xbox hacking.

 Abstract:  Edwin H. Porter served as a 1st Lieutenant in the 4th Michigan Calvary during the U.S. Civil War. Born in New York in 1823, Porter moved to Michigan in 1833. He enlisted with the 4th Michigan Cavalry in 1862 and mustered out in 1864. Following the Civil War, Porter served in various positions in Michigan state government. Porter died in 1912. The papers include invoices and lists of stores, vouchers, "Return of Provisions" forms, auditor reports, and special field orders, among others.

 Abstract:  A collection of ten issues of the broadside, "Japan Expedition Press", published during Commodore Matthew C. Perry's U.S. Naval Expedition to Japan, 1854. Collection also includes a single broadside titled, "Sailing Directions for the Harbor of Simoda", dated 26 October 1854. NOTE: This collection is unprocessed.

 Abstract:  Edward D. Sculley, born in 1813 in Mayfield, Michigan, worked on his family farm until 1861. He then moved to Lapeer, Michigan, to learn the blacksmithing trade. By 1872, he was working in the field, and set up the firm of Sculley & Merson in 1881. The E.D. Sculley Collection contains assorted blacksmith's ledgers and account books, receipts, a statue of Jesus, a snuff tin, and a leather case containing a pair of eyeglasses. Also included are Edison Institute invoices from 1959-1960 for blacksmithing supplies and equipment signed by E.Hartman/Blacksmith. This may be Earl Hartman, who worked for the museum at the time.  Abstract:  James E. Maxfield, Jr. (1848-1919), an illustrator, portraitist, and landscape painter, was born in Ohio, but grew up in Michigan. According to Paul Mattingly in "An American Art Colony", Maxfield studied under artist John Mix Stanley, an itinerant sign and portrait painter. Maxfield eventually found his way to Ridgefield, New Jersey, where his home became the headquarters for the Country Sketch Club. The James Maxfield Papers, 1896, contains 13 pieces of correspondence; 6 envelopes; 2 patterned paper napkins; a list of prices or costs on a scrap of paper; and a receipt for a burial, possibly for his wife Jennie who passed on 23 September 1896.  Abstract:  Rhea Mansfield Knittle was born in Ashland, Ohio, in 1883. Along with her husband Earl, she would scour the Ohio countryside looking for glass, pottery, silver, textiles, and other decorative arts antiques. Over the years, Rhea became an expert on early glass production, publishing her first magazine article in 1924 and continuing into the 1940s. The Rhea M. Knittle Collection contains research and notes on decorative arts, correspondence, photographic prints, nitrate and safety film photographic negatives, 11 glass plate negatives, approximately 20 metal plates used for printing blocks, and 55 printing blocks. The nitrate and safety film negatives are housed separately from the rest of the collection. Extent: 7.35 cubic ft. (15 boxes). The collection is open for research.

 Abstract:  In the late 1800s, nurseries and traveling salesmen could purchase individual plates or books of plates depicting fruits, flowers, and ornamental trees to show potential clients their products. Often, these plates included a brief description of the plant and images of assorted fruits, like apples, peaches, grapes, and berries; trees, such as Norway spruce and weeping willow; or flowers, such as lilacs, hydrangeas, and gladiolus. The Nurseryman's Specimen Books contains two samples of these catalogs, both containing colored 6x9 inch color plates. The first book contains prints made by D.M. Dewey of Rochester, New York, and the cover does indicate who may have used it. The second is noted as being from the Great Northern Nursery Co. in Baraboo, Wisconsin. It is a fold-out design with 6 plates attached to a ribbon for flipping the pages. The images in this book were created by the Rochester Lithograph Company of Rochester, New York, which merged with D.M. Dewey in 1888. The collection is open for research. 0.3 cubic ft. (1 box).

 Abstract:  The collection consists of three sets of publications produced for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago, Illinois. A group of 20 prints in color and black-and-white illustrating scenes from the Exposition; an incomplete portfolio set titled, "World’s Fair Art Series", published by N.D. Thompson Publishing Co.; and a large-format book, "The Book of the Fair", in nine volumes, by Hubert Howe Bancroft.
